A native of Montreal, Quebec, Guy Mauffette began his career as a theater actor at a young age. In 1936 he went into radio and in 1939 was hired as the host of Radio-Canada’s “Un homme et son péché.” That same year, Mauffette discovered a young Quebec singer and poet named Felix Leclerc, whom he hired and encouraged to sing on radio for the first time. Becoming known to his listeners as “l’Oiseau de nuit,” or the Night Bird, Mauffette is best remembered as host of Radio-Canada’s “Le cabaret du soir qui penche” which aired every Sunday evening from 1960 until 1973. In addition to radio he also appeared on television, most notably as Monsieur Surprise on “La boîte à surprise” from 1961 until 1965, and in film, in movies such as “Le Père Chopin” (1945), “Le Curé de village” (1949), and “Les lumières de ma ville” (1950) He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 1972 and a Grand Officier of l’Ordre national de Quebec in 1996.
